This week, the USDA recalled 143
million pounds of beef that has been
purchased and consumed for the last 2
years. Officials say the recalled meat
poses little health risk. "There's not a
darn thing anyone can do about meat
that's already been digested, but we
just wanted to issue the recall anyway
and put the scare out there."   "We
mainly want to cause people concern,"
said an unidentified source. "Right
now, we are working on changing our
labels to include such cuts as 'flank of
non-ambulatory cow.' But let's face it,
recalling meat that was eaten and
digested two years ago is a
monumental task, and there's little
hope of ever getting it all back.
The USDA has been inundated with
calls and a source said that these are
mostly from "big meat eaters who are
really, really mad." He said that those
against the recall insist that "the meat
smelled good when we cooked it. It
tasted even better." An official said
that the department hopes to get some
of these cows cloned before all of them
are destroyed.
"We've learned an important lesson
here and cloning this beef will ensure
that we never forget it."
And just because none of this makes
sense anyway...

Governor Schwarzenegger responds...

In light of the fact that 37 million pounds
of the recalled California meat has
gone into school lunches, Governor
Schwarzenegger vowed that he would
make further cuts into the state's
budget where the schools are
concerned. When pressed to explain
his connection between beef and
budgets, he reasoned, "I was
encouraged that 45 other states spend
more money on their school children
than we do, but I am thinking that we
can do even better. I vow to cut the
school lunch program altogether and I
aim to do it on the basis of recalled
meat. Cutting lunch programs will save
money and protect children from bad
meat.

In the interest of public safety, even
though "there is no significant health
risk," people who like to collect and
freeze meat are advised to be aware
that a frozen package of this product
might go for quite a bit on ebay.
Where's the Beef???
It was always my dream to become a journalist.
Let me indulge myself...
So it's doubtful that I'll be getting a job as a journalist anytime soon.
It's that whole thing about being completely honest while reporting...
it kinda takes the fun out of it.
(And no, before I get emails from anyone, they're not really cutting any school lunch programs that
I know of.  I may visit this subject again later.  If you want more info, you can
contact me.)

Hopefully, the above did not depress you in any way.  I find it rather nauseating.
It makes me mad too...but what can you do after two years of eating it?
It probably happens more often than we think.

Enough serious stuff...here's something to make you smile...
I stopped to talk this pickle as he danced around,
advertising the opening of his new sandwich shop at
525 Adobe Road in Red Bluff.
He seemed happy, if a bit restricted within his costume.
I was concerned but upon closer examination was relieved to see that he had
a tattoo (even a pickle needs some self-expression!).
I haven't been into Mr. Pickles Sandwich Shop yet,
but I was in the Starbuck's right next door and could smell the freshly
baked bread. Mmmm!  Very Important:
Pickles have never had any kind of a recall so we're very safe here.
Mr. Pickles appeared to be very healthy and was even dancing around.
Thus far, he seems to have escaped being sliced up and put into a sandwich.
As long as we see him on the corner of Main and Adobe, we'll know he's safe.
We'll check out the sandwich shop soon and give you our review.
This is something I might leave to Jonah since he is the sandwich enthusiast
at our house. When learning to talk, the first two words he put together
were "peanut butter" and he once went through a phase where he wanted
only peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
At the age of 11, his sandwich palate is developing nicely.
I'll let you know how it goes...
Maybe we'll be lucky enough to see Mr. Pickles himself.

Mr. Pickles doesn't have a website, but
here's a link to find out more.
