One of the most original artists in Red Bluff...
Earlier this week at the Farmer's
Market, I met up with Randy Rainwater,
poet, storyteller...and now artist.

Randy had shoulder surgery recently
and being unable to work, thought of
this new hobby to keep busy.  He was
not sure of how these painted rocks
would be received when he laid them
out for all of Red Bluff to see.
Well, my friends and I think these are
the coolest things we've seen in a long
time.  The faces remind me of
Quentin Blake's illustrations in
Roald Dahl's books for children
(The Twits, The BFG...).
His unique creations caught the eye
of everyone passing by...
They were quite a hit.
Randy said that now he can't pick up a
rock without seeing something else
take shape.  While most people would
see "just a rock," he sees a bear, an
alligator, or a pirate...
I don't know, I'm looking at these rocks
and I'm thinking that some of them
resemble people I know.
I guess it's true what they say...
everyone has a twin somewhere.
These two rocks should be sold as a
pair...looks like an old man yelling at his
wife.  Check out the broken veins in his
face.  If this looks like you and your
spouse, I suggest you buy the set.

The guy below is my favorite.
Besides the camel (right) and the alligator
(above), Randy had fish, bears, pelicans,
grapes, strawberries, baseball mitts...
you name it!
He even had a fingertip!
Now that was a little alarming!
Think of the pranks you could
play with it.  Might be fun to leave it in the
grass for someone to find.
Or, maybe in a parking lot.
Stop by Randy's table next Wednesday night and while you're
there, ask him about cowboy poetry.  He performs for group parties, etc.

Hmmm...this is the kind of thing that makes our town truly unique!
Being a Red Bluff writer, I'm hoping for a clocktower rock.
Might take some looking to find a rock that's shaped just right...
I might have to settle for a pigeon...or a mattress...or a treadmill...
