Last week, I saw the above sign while driving home. "Big Kenney's Christmas Trees." Big Kenney? Who was he? I was intrigued...Why was he called "Big Kenney?" When I found out that my cousin knew this mystery man, I dragged her down to the lot for an introduction. Thanks, Jeanne. Hanging out at Kenney's Christmas Tree lot was entertaining.

Dubbed "Big Kenney" by a Little League coach, the name stuck. Standing at 6'6", I couldn't resist the temptation to ask what size of shoe he wears. That would be a 16. Wow! Kenney harvests all of the trees himself, bringing them down from Oregon. All the trees are displayed in water, making them the freshest in town. Before the sale, each is treated with fire retardant...do you have kids? This is very important!
Kenney's Little Elves
Big Kenney's Christmas Tree Lot is located on Antelope Boulevard next to Pronto Market. A nice way to spend an evening: stop in at Pronto Market and pick up something to drink, then visit the lot and choose your tree. |
Who were these guys working for Kenney? He said they were his elves. He didn't tell me where he found these three. After the interview, I imagined that he might have been a little evasive. After giving the matter some thought, I think I've stumbled across something... Big Kenney has a big secret... I'll tell you what I think it is. If you're a regular reader, you know I'm pretty good at assessing a situation.
Shaking the Tree Clean...
I quickly learned that Big Kenney knows Christmas trees. After spending time with him, I can now discuss the topic at length, and can tell you the difference between the trees on the lot...that a Grand Fir has the best smell, but a Noble Fir is the premium of all Christmas trees and is the #1 seller in the U.S. Doug Firs, White firs, Grand Firs, Noble Firs, Silvertips... Kenney has them all, and maybe a few more that I've neglected to mention.
My Theory... On his last trip to Oregon, Kenney accidently cut down the previously undiscovered Keebler Elf tree. Feeling responsible for these displaced elves, he brought them home and gave them jobs. (Elves like to work, everyone knows that.) If you need extra help, I recommend hiring an elf. In fact, I could use a few to help with house work. Kenney, I suggest you open an elf lot, in addition to the trees. These would be in great demand. These guys were polite and helpful, everything you could ask for in an elf.
I like this video. I laugh every time I watch it. I don't know why. This is the best place to buy your tree. This lot is owned by a local man, not a chain store...you can appreciate the difference. I like being treated like a person, and indulged when I ask for odd things like, "Shake the tree again."
